Mailwell has no servers. The app on your Mac connects directly to your email providers. Your messages, contacts, and credentials never pass through, and are never stored on, any infrastructure operated by Mailwell.
What stays on your Mac
All mail data — messages, attachments, search index — is stored locally on your Mac.
Account credentials and OAuth tokens are stored in the macOS Keychain.
The app contains no analytics, telemetry, or crash reporting. Usage of the app is not observable to us.
Remote images in messages are blocked by default, which also blocks read-tracking pixels.
Network connections the app makes
Your email providers — direct IMAP/SMTP, Microsoft Graph, Gmail, or JMAP connections, all over TLS. This is the app's job.
Gumroad (the payment processor) — license activation and periodic checks send only your license key, never your mail or email address. Purchases themselves happen on Gumroad under Gumroad's privacy policy.
GitHub — the app checks a public GitHub release feed for signed updates. A standard download request; no account data is sent.
Avatars (optional) — sender avatars are fetched from Gravatar (a salted hash of the sender's address, never yours) and site favicons. Turn avatars off in Settings and these requests stop.
AI assistant (optional, off by default) — if you add your own API key in Settings, invoking the ✨ button sends that draft's text to the provider you chose (Anthropic, OpenAI, or any compatible server, including local ones). Nothing is sent unless you press the button.
Alias services (optional) — if you add a SimpleLogin or addy.io API key, alias actions you trigger call that service's API.
That's the complete list. No other third parties receive anything.
Security measures
Every release is Developer ID-signed and notarized by Apple, and updates are verified with an additional cryptographic signature before installing.
All network traffic — mail sync, license checks, updates — uses TLS encryption.
Message HTML is rendered in an isolated WebKit process, separate from the rest of the app.
Support correspondence
Email sent to hello@mailwell.app is used solely to respond to your inquiry and is never shared or sold.
License Terms
Your license
A Mailwell license is for one person and covers all of their email accounts on up to 3 Macs they personally use.
Don't share or resell your key. Keys that are shared publicly or resold may be disabled.
The subscription is billed by Gumroad, the merchant of record, which processes payment and collects any applicable taxes. It renews automatically until you cancel.
Trial and cancellation
Every subscription starts with a 7-day free trial. Cancel during the trial and you are not charged.
You may cancel at any time from your Gumroad Library (Manage membership). After cancellation, the app remains fully functional until the end of the billing period you have already paid for.
Charges for a billing period already underway are not refunded; cancellation simply stops future renewals.
The fine print
Mailwell is provided as is, without warranty of any kind. To the maximum extent permitted by law, liability is limited to the amount you paid in the 12 months before a claim.
You are responsible for complying with your email providers' terms of service.
These terms may be updated as the product evolves; material changes will be noted in release notes. Continued use after a change constitutes acceptance.
